Horticulture deptt to establish 3 walnut nurseries in Kashmir

Director horticulture, Kashmir, Ajaz Ahmad Bhat took a review of three walnut nurseries being established in Anantnag, Kupwara and Srinagar districts with an estimated cost of Rs 5.38 crore.

A spokesperson of the horticulture department said thesenurseries are being developed to produce grafted high quality walnut plants ofimproved varieties and selections.

A mother orchard of different walnut varieties are alsobeing established at these farms which will cater the large demand of scionwood required during grafting of walnut plants.

Directors horticuture later visited Zawora, Khunmoh farmwhere one such nursery is being established and took stock of all thedevelopmental activities.

He was accompanied by joint director, CHO Srinagar and otherfield functionaries of the department.

He also planted some walnut trees in the mother walnutorchard being established there.

The mother orchard will cater the demand of bud woodrequired for producing quality walnut plants to a large extent.
