All private and public sector banks Saturday remained open for full day in the wake of RBI directive that banks shall operate for full day every 1st and 3rd Saturday and remain closed on every 2nd and 4th Saturday.

Earlier the banks operated for half day on every Saturday.

The customers said that this was a new experience for them as they could visit the banks in the afternoon and carry out their financial transactions.

Most of the bank branches this reporter visited on Saturday were abuzz with customer presence.

Muhammad Ayub, Branch Manager, C D Hospital Branch, J&K Bank said that they had texted to the customers informing them that the bank henceforth shall remain open on every first and third Saturday.

"An increase in the overall transactions was seen as business hours have extended till 4pm while the bank remained open till 5pm," Ayub said.

SajjadBazaz, Incharge, Corporate Communications and Corporate Social Responsibility, J&K Bank said the closure of banks on two Saturdays every month "will provide boost to banking through alternate delivery channels at home."

He said electronic banking and internet banking will also become more widely used as people who intend to carry out banking operations on closed Saturdays will opt for 'modern methods of banking'.

Bank customers have welcomed RBI decision of alternate working Saturdays.

Muhammad Javed , a J&K Bank depositor hailing from Kargil said he withdrew cash from CD Hospital Branch at 3 PM despite it being Saturday.

He called it a welcome move. "I had to pay my son's college fee for which I made a transaction in the afternoon today. This is a sensible move by RBI to let banks work full day on Saturday," Javed said.
