Govt reconstitutes SMPB for development, use of medicinal plants

Jammu and Kashmir government Wednesday re-constituted State Medicinal Plants Board (SMPB) to look after policy formulation, coordination with other departments for development and sustainable use of medicinal plants.

Jammu and Kashmir government Wednesday re-constituted State Medicinal Plants Board (SMPB) to look after policy formulation, coordination with other departments for development and sustainable use of medicinal plants.

According to government order number, 144 -GAD of 2019, dated January 30, 2019, sanction has been accorded to the re-constitution of Jammu and Kashmir State Medicinal Plants Board under the Chairmanship of Advisor (K) to the Governor (In- charge Health & Medical Education) in supersession of all previous orders issued on the subject.

Administrative secretary, health and medical education department has been appointed as vice chairman of the board and chief executive officer, Jammu and Kashmir Medicinal Plants Board appointed as member secretary.

Vice-chancellors of Sher-i-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology, Jammu and Kashmir, divisional commissioners for Kashmir and Jammu, principal chief conservator of forests, J&K, director, IIIM, J&K, director, Indian System of Medicines, J&K, Director, Horticulture, Jammu and Kashmir, Director, Agriculture, Jammu and Kashmir, Director, Floriculture, Gardens & Parks, Jammu and Kashmir, Director, State Forest Research Institute, Director, Entrepreneur Development Institute, J&K, Controller, Drug & Food Control Organization, J&K,  Head of the Department, Department of Botany, University of Jammu/ University of Kashmir were appointed as members of the board.

The board would look after policy formulation, coordination with other departments, ensure sustained availability of medicinal plants, coordinate on all matters relating to the development and sustainable use of medicinal plants, besides checking erosion and degradation of resources and marketing.

It will involve and assign the required matters to the departments and organizations engaged in cultivation of medicinal plants.

The board assesses the potential of medicinal plants which grow naturally in the state of J&K.
