Lack of facilities turns tourists away from Yusmarg

Lack of infrastructure, poor mobile and internet network, and mismanagement by the officials at picturesque Yusmarg in the Budgam district is taking toll on the tourism at this famous resort.

People who earn their bread and butter at the destination lament the decline of the tourism activities, as they say lack of facilities and mismanagement is turning away the tourists from Yusmarg.

Pony wallas, restaurant owners and shopkeepers at the resort say that they sit idle whole day waiting for the customers but few or on some days none turn up at a time when Kashmir is witnessing relatively some good flow of tourists.

They blame the government for being unable to develop the resort and provide the facilities like good network coverage, Gandola service project, ATMs, adventurous sports facilities and instead charge heavy toll on taxis and cars brining the visitors.

“You can imagine how much we suffer, I mean tourists don’t even want to spend a single night here as they complain about telecommunication problem, and lack of other facilities like adventurous sport activities etc,” says a private hotel owner at Yusmarg.

“Yusmarg is still waiting for its Nilnag-Yusmarg Gandola Service project, which is lingering over the years,” he says.

“We want this beautiful place should be developed as a proper tourist resort, it should not be neglected at any cost,” says president Yusmarg Pony Walla Assocaition, Abdul Hamid Khan.

“Yusmarg is being neglected especially when it comes to development, our whole earning is depend on tourism so we want government should pay heed towards this resort so that tourism will flourish here,” he added.

When contacted, CEO Yusmarg Development Authority Gulzar Ahmad, while admitting that the destination is facing network connectivity problem said they approached BSNL many a times but they have not responded so far.
