LMD fines Dhaba for overcharging

Acting on a complaint lodged by a tourist via e-mail on INGRAM consumer portal against a Dhaba in the Boulevard area, Legal Metrology Department Friday penalised the owner for overcharging on bottled water.

The maximum retail price (MRP) printed on the bottle was Rs 20 and the Dhaba charged him Rs 25. The challan was made out against the Dhaba for violating Legal Metrology (Packaged Commodities) Rules, 2011 and was accordingly penalised.

Hotels and restaurants can charge more than MRP printed on the beverages and bottled water as they are providing service and ambience to its customers. However, there cannot be dual MRPs on the identical packages meant for same city/state. This exemption is not allowed on Dhabas.
