Srinagar: Amid reports of misbranded handicraft items being passed to tourists as Kashmir craft, the department of Handicrafts and Handlooms (H&H) has issued an advisory for visiting tourists asking them to buy only genuine products from registered handicrafts dealers.
A statement by H&H department states that Directorate of Handicrafts and Handloom Kashmir has launched a vigorous inspection drive in all the notified tourist areas, to check for the violation of Jammu & Kashmir Handicrafts Quality Control Act, Jammu & Kashmir Tourist Trade Act 1978 and Jammu & Kashmir Namdha Quality Control Act.
“The dealers found indulging in malpractice are being imposed fines and necessary penal /legal action also stands initiated against some of the handicraft dealers.”
The advisory says that all the visiting tourists through the medium of this notice are hereby informed to ensure purchase of only genuine handmade Kashmir Art products from such handicrafts business establishments which are registered with Directorate of Handicrafts and Handloom under Jammu & Kashmir Tourist Trade Act.
“Before any purchase they should check the credentials of the business establishment through the displayed registration certificate issued by the department. They should also ensure receipt of a proper cash memo for every purchase and retain /preserve the copy of the same for any future reference. In case of any complaint of malpractice, cheating, touting, impersonation and exorbitant pricing etc they can contact the department,” advisory reads.
