13-YEAR-OLD GIRL ‘RAPED’: Protest staged in Ramban

Leaders of religious organizations, social activists and members of several NGOs, accompanied by locals, staged a demonstration at district office complex, Maitra, on Tuesday against the alleged rape of a 13-year-old nomadic girl.

While addressing the protesters, ChoudharyTalibHussain, social activist turned politician, alleged, “I have been informed by the people that some police officers, posted in Ramban district, are trying to hush up the case. They (police officers) are trying to protect some of the accused by pressurizing the investigation team.”

The protesters threatened that they would go to any extent to get justice for the 13-year-old girl from VarnalSarbagni. “The innocent child was gang raped multiple times by the five accused. The girl and her parents have already identified all the accused, but the police has only arrested one among them. How is this justified?” they alleged.

The protesters also met the district magistrate, Ramban, and apprised him about the incident, besides putting forth their apprehensions. “We told the DM that we feel an impartial probe is being conducted,” they told Greater Kashmir.

Senior superintendent of police, Ramban, Anita Sharma, while talking to Greater Kashmir, said, “A special investigation team (SIT) has been constituted. The team will conduct an in-depth probe and we will have a better picture very soon.”

The SIT is being supervised by additional superintendent of police, Sanjay Parihar, while deputy superintendent of police, Banihal, Sajad Ahmed is also a member.

It is pertinent to mention here that a 13-year-old nomadic girl was allegedly raped around 8 months ago and a case was registered at Ramsu police station on the directions of senior superintendent of police, Ramban, Anita Sharma. Besides, the victim is undergoing treatment at Shalamar hospital and her condition is stated to be critical.
