Several drivers today took to streets and blocked the highway to protest against alleged despotism of the traffic cops near Ramban on Jammu-Srinagar Highway.
As per reports, the drivers of load carriers and other passenger vehicles blocked the national highway this evening to protest against the dictatorship of the traffic department.
They said the protests started after a Jammu bound load carrier was chased away by the police for not conceding their alleged demand to pay money for plying on the roads.
"The driver of the vehicle, Sunit Kumar, a resident of Mogna Sunderbani refused to comply by the demand which infuriated the traffic cops, who thrashed the driver ruthlessly in full public view," said an eye witness on the spot.
He claimed that to rescue himself from the traffic police, the driver jumped into a gorge and was seriously injured.
Meanwhile, other en route drivers on seeing this parked their vehicle on the middle off the road and staged protest demonstration against traffic cops on Highway, they said.
The protesting drivers not only raised anti-traffic police slogans, but also leveled serious allegations against the department for promoting corruption and extortion in the state by fleecing poor drivers plying on the road.
Senior police officers including SHO Police Station Ramban Ajay Singh Chib reached on the spot and shifted the injured driver to District Hospital Ramban.
However, to pacify the protesting drivers, the police had to assure registration of FIR against the accused traffic cops.
