5 arrested, 538 kg poppy straw recovered: Police
Jammu and Kashmir police on Thursday claimed to have arrested five men and and recovered 538 kg of poppy straw from their possession during separate naka checkings in Ramban district.
The police said, "We received a tip-off that a truck, loaded with apples, en route Punjab from Kashmir had poppy straw loaded in it," adding, "A team of police constituted a check-post near Chanderkote police station and intercepted one such truck, JK03C 4086. On its search, 531 kg of poppy straw were recovered, which was seized. Besides, the driver of the vehicle, identified as Sukhdev Singh of Punjab, was arrested."
The arrest and recovery were made by a team led by SHO Chanderkote Abid Hussan Bhukhari, under the supervision of additional superintendent of police Sanjay Parihar and senior superintendent of police Anita Sharma.
An FIR has been registered under the NDPS Act and an investigation has been started, police said.
Meanwhile, a team from Banihal police station, during checking near Shaitani Nallah, intercepted an Eco Sports car, PB07AM 3407.
"While checking the vehicle, 7 kg of poppy straw were recovered. Besides, four men, aboard the car, were also arrested. They have been identified as Balwinder Singh, Gurvinder Singh, Harjinder Singh and Surinder Singh, all residents of Punjab," police said.
An FIR was registered and police are investigating the case further.
