Bodies of 3 newborns found outside DH Kishtwar

Jammu and Kashmir police Tuesday recovered bodies of three newborn babies, which had been dumped in the backyard of district hospital, Kishtwar.

Station house officer, Kishtwar, Bashir Ahmad, said, “Threedumped bodies of newborns were recovered from the backyard of districthospital, Kishtwar. Among the bodies, one has been identified as a female,while the other two are male.”

   

Incharge superintendent of the district hospital, Dr P LBhagat, told Greater Kashmir: “Three women underwent abortion due to certainmedical circumstances. One among the aborted babies, a 6-month-old, haddeveloped a medical complication pertaining to the brain. Another one, a4-month-old, had already died inside the womb and had to be removed, while thethird, a 7-month-old, had to be aborted due to genuine medical problemsconnected between the mother and the child.”

On being contacted, deputy commissioner, Kishtwar, AngrezSingh Rana, said: “Three women underwent abortion due to some medical issues.Thereafter, the bodies of the newborns were dumped in the premises of thedistrict hospital, which were recovered by the police. A case has beenregistered and further investigations are going on.”

The station house officer, Kishtwar, told Greater Kashmirthat a case under section 318 (concealment of birth by secret disposal ofbody). “We have detained two people in connection with the case andinvestigations are underway.”

Meanwhile, district president Peoples Democratic Party, Sheikh Nasir, condemned the incident. “It is very unfortunate and inhuman and the district hospital authorities are equally responsible for the mess, as the authorities needed to instruct the people on how to dispose of the bodies, rather than abandoning them in dustbins. The concerned authorities must take stern action and keep a strict vigil in a bid to ensure that such incidents do not happen in the future,” he said.
