Residents of Karool village staged a demonstration on the Jammu-Srinagar highway on Wednesday and blocked it for more than two hours, to lodge their protest against the district administration and contractor company working on 4-laning of Jammu-Srinagar highway.
The protesters were joined by senior Congress leader Arun Singh Raju and they raised slogans against the administration and contractor company. The agitating locals demanded rehabilitation of people, whose houses and business establishments have been demolished for the purpose of four-laning of the highway at Karool.
While speaking to media persons, the Congress leader demanded disbursement of full compensation in favor of the affected residents and rehabilitation on the pattern of Pul Doda. He also asked the administration to stop the demolition drive, until the issue is resolved.
The locals alleged, "The administration and officers of contractor company are taking advantage of poor people. They are taking us for a ride and we are not being properly rehabilitated or compensated."
Expressing anguish and surprise over the manner of demolition, without releasing full compensation to the affected people, the Congress leader termed it high handedness on part of the administration as well as the contractor company.
Later, the officers from administration and police assured the protestors that the demolition of structures will be stopped, till the matter is amicably solved.
