A resident of Kishtwar district hospitalized at Government Medical College Jammu died under suspicious circumstances.
Identified as Shabir Ahmed son of Shah Wali of Goorian, Kishtwar the deceased was admitted at GMC on Jan 29 but breathed his last today. His body was shifted to mortuary for further legal action.
As per reports the deceased had undergone some surgical procedure and was believed to be responding to the treatment. However, he suddenly developed some complicacy and breathed his last.
Family members alleged that the 32 year old youth was reprimanded to police custody by a court where he is suspected to have been tortured. A complaint was filed by wife of the deceased seeking probe into the matter and same was forwarded to police for investigation.
Immediately after learning about the incident, Member Legislative Council Firdous Tak rushed to the hospital and got the body shifted to mortuary room. "The doctors were not permitting the body to be kept in mortuary claiming that postmortem wan not be conducted as no MLC case has been registered. However they later conceded to the demand on the intervention of MLC", Irshad Ahmed, brother of the deceased said.
Official sources said that conceding to the demand of a probe by the legislator the district administration Jammu ordered constitution of Board of Doctors to conduct postmortem of the body.
Father of five minor children, the deceased was working as labourer.
Police meanwhile said that the deceased was undergoing treatment well before he was detained on court direction. They refuted allegations of torture and said he was treated even in custody.
The postmortem of the body is expected to be conducted tomorrow following which it will be handed over to family.
