Kishtwar residents oppose proposed privatisation of power distribution

A large number of people of Kishtwar town and adjoining areas today demanded rollback of "government proposal" on privatisation of electricity.

The people said government has started the process for privatising the electricity distribution in the state "for which metering and wiring work has commenced in Kishtwar town."

Khursheed Ahmed, a local said the state government should revoke this decision forthwith. He said the government "is putting the assets of Jammu and Kashmir on sale to meet its filthy interests."

The residents of the town said the state and the central governments are getting electricity from their region, using their water resources from river Chenab. "Instead of giving us free electricity, government is planning to privatize the electricity so as to fleece the people," they said.

They said the "unbundling will allow the companies to charge as much as they want.

It will prove highly harmful for the common consumer as power tariff will skyrocket," they said and demanded rollback of the proposal of privatization of PDD.

Meanwhile, the people urged Chief Minister , Mehbooba Mufti to intervene in the matter and to give relief to the people of Kishtwar as they have given out their lands for construction of NHPC power projects, quarters and other administrative blocks.

They said the civil society Kishtwar will stage protest and would initiate the signature campaign for the revocation of privatisation plan.
