No end to traffic snarls between Ramban, Banihal

The Srinagar-Jammu national highway on Monday again witnessed a massive traffic snarl between Banihal and Ramban as commuters fretted about the frequent frustrating situation.

Commuters alleged that neither traffic police nor any other authorities bothered to bring order on this stretch of the important highway.

Hundreds of vehicles, both load carriers and passenger cars remained stuck for hours between Ramban and Banihal.

Passengers narrated their ordeal to Greater Kashmir at Maroog as they couldn’t move ahead for hours.

They dismissed “tall claims” of the national highway traffic police, complaining a journey that should take a couple of hours consumes almost the entire day.

Residents of Ramban have become the worst affected.

“Before venturing out between Ramban and Ramsu we ponder several times, fearing of getting stuck in the traffic jam,” said Dilavar Sohil of Ramsu.

The Jammu-Srinagar Highway has riled up people, drivers and commuters alike, since almost six weeks as rarely a day passes without the traffic jamming between the two important towns of Banihal and Chanderkote.

Traffic authorities, police and the contractors working on the expansion of the highway keep passing the buck from each other, residents complain.

“Public is being made to suffer for no fault of theirs,” complained Hari Om Singh, a social activist of Ramban town.
