The locals alleged on Thursday that the Jammu-Srinagar highway has been converted into an undeclared bus stand by operators of busses, mini-busses and taxis, while the constructed bus stands witness encroachment by vendors and handcart owners in Banihal and Ramban.

The locals said, "It is strange that these people are getting away with violation of the law right under the right nose of the district and sub-district administration, police and traffic police. We are suffering due to the mess created on the highway, especially between Cafeteria Morh and Khowbagh in Ramban and Old Toll Post and Gundadalkote in Banihal  town."

They alleged that though the district administration started a drive to clear the Ramban bus stand from illegal encroachment, but due to political interference, the drive was stopped. "This is a chronic problem and needs to be solved right away for hassle free movement of traffic," they demanded.

Executive Officer Municipal Committee Ramban was not available for his comments, despite repeated phone calls by Greater Kashmir.
