Srinagar, Mar 15: A plastic furniture factory and a band saw mill were gutted in a fire incident at HMT area on city outskirts today.

Officials said the incident occurred in the Industrial Estate at HMT Srinagar in wee hours today. They said that a U-shaped building housing Hi-Tech Furniture (Plastic furniture factory) and Vees Enterprises (Band sawmill) caught fire and engulfed the buildings.

“We received information about the incident at 5 am and rushed multiple fire tenders to douse off the flames. Fire tenders from Headquarters, Mujgund, MR Gunj, Magam , Rawalpora, Safa Kadal were deployed to control fire. After hours of work the fire was controlled and stopped from spreading to other structures in the vicinity,” said the official.

Officials said that wood material and plastic made the fire worse, and it spread quickly. They said the cause of the fire is under investigation. This is the fourth fire incident in the last three days in Srinagar. Earlier multiple shops and residential houses were gutted in Downtown and city centre on Wednesday and Thursday. The officials from the fire and Emergency department said that unsafe use of heating gadgets and overlooking safety measures in residential and commercial structures is the reason for growing fire incidents.
