Need for efficient public transport

It is a common experience with the people who work till late evenings in their offices, or stay longer on their shops, or have some more shopping to do in the markets; it is not easy to find a way to reach home if you don't own a private vehicle.

The condition of public transport in srinagar city is so bad that most of the people drive their private vehicles into the city centre just for the reason that they would otherwise get stuck. One of the reasons that our main markets, and main roads, are filled with too much traffic is that there is no efficient public transport in Srinagar. Even in the catchment area of a few kilometers people are compelled to take their own vehicles.

Some decades back when we had less number of private vehicles the public transport would served people well. People would reach every place in and around the city using this public transport. But over the years we have seen a decline in it. Elsewhere we have cities that are equipped with an efficient public transport system.

People keep their cars parked in home spaces and prefer to travel through public transport. It saves them money, besides addressing the problem of traffic jamming. Just a cursory look at the problems that Srinagar city is facing because of not having an efficient public transport system. One, we have more cars on the road, thus leading to frequent jams. Two, government has to arrange for more parking spaces.

Three, the levels of pollution go up. Four, people have to spend more money in terms of fuel consumption and wear and tear of the cars. And above all, for those who have no private cars it is immensely troubling.

They waste hours before reaching their destinations. The government must revive this sector and ensure that we have an efficient and comfortable public transport system that caters to public needs.

It can address multiple problems, besides creating job opportunities. The concerned departments must join heads and work out a detailed plan for installing an efficient public transport system in Srinagar city.
