Water Scarcity

Reports of scarcity of drinking water are pouring in from different areas. The residents say that because of the problem they are forced to fetch the water from streams. The water in some streams is polluted causing water borne diseases.

People in other affected areas say that because of the ongoing dry spell enough water is not flowing in the streams. They say the scarcity of drinking water was brought into the notice of concerned officials but no action is being taken.

The residents demand supply of water through tankers till the water supply through taps improves. The officials must address the problem of the people and provide the drinking water supply through taps. The people should not suffer and not be compelled to get water from polluted streams. Then there is a possibility of water borne diseases.

Such diseases sometimes take a serious turn which lead to hospitalisation of those affected. The ongoing dry spell and lack of snowfall is a cause of concern. The plain areas of Kashmir are yet to experience the first snowfall of the season.

Some upper reaches had snowfall but major snowfall in plain areas is also important. Heavy snowfall in this season in Kashmir helps in good availability of water in coming seasons-autumn and summer. It has been noticed that when enough snowfall does not occur in winter, then there is shortage of water in summer.

Scarcity of drinking water and that of water for irrigation creates lot of problems for the people. The farmers in several areas have a tough time. It also affects the production in agriculture and horticulture sectors.

While a snowfall is not in our hands but finding solutions to the dry spell related problems is possible. Work in advance must be done for that. Steps must be taken by the concerned department to take maximium advantage of water available so that it reaches to the maximum number of people.
