Gunfight underway in Shopian

A gunfight between security forces and militants is underway in BaderhamaZawoora village of south Kashmir’s Shopian district.

An official said that following a tip-off, a joint party ofArmy’s 23 para, Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and Jammu & KashmirPolice cordoned off the area on Wednesday to nab the militants.

   

“The search operation turned into a gunfight after militantsholed up in the area opened fire on forces, triggering an encounter. Theexchange of fire was continuing till late evening,” he said.

According to police no body was recovered from the gunfightspot yet and the intermittent firing was going on when this report was beingfiled by late Wednesday evening.

Security forces have also installed lights and tightened theouter layer cordon to prevent the militants from escaping.

Two to three militants are believed to be trapped in thearea.

Following the gunfight, authorities suspended mobileinternet services in Shopian district.
