Locals seek functioning of satellite university campus in Kupwara

A protest demonstration was held in Kupwara against authorities of Kashmir University for failing to make the university satellite campus functional in the district.

The protest was held by member of civil society Kupwara andother locals.

   

Protesting members said that the campus in underconstruction from last 10 years in the forests of Wayen Kupwara.

“If this campus would have been made operational in time,our wards wouldn’t need huge money to study outside the district,” said ShowkatMasoodi, chairman civil society Kupwara.

He said that there are hundreds of children of poor familieswho stopped their education at college level because they cannot afford rent orhostel fee in Srinagar. “Some have sought admission through distance educationto complete their dream of getting educated,” Masoodi said.

The people living in the border areas suffer the most inabsence of the university campus. “They have to travel more than 130 kilometersto reach Srinagar,” said another protester, Saqib Ahmad.

He said that every year more than 1500 students from fivedegree collages complete their bachelor’s degree in Kupwara.

The satellite campus in Kupwara district was announced in2008 on 500 kanals of land at Wayun to make higher education easily accessiblefor the students residing in border districts of north Kashmir.
