All public drinking water points in Handwara are lying defunct due to non-maintenance by the municipal authorities.

The locals of the town while accusing the MunicipalCommittee Handwara of negligence toward these points said the facilitiesinstalled years ago have never been maintained by the MCH.

They said they have to buy the water bottles from the marketor have to request the tea stalls/shopkeepers for a glass of water. “The lackof this facility is affecting the common people,” said Abdul Ahad of Handwara.

The town witnesses huge public footfall as people from morethan 150 villages come here daily for shopping, labour, employment and otherthings. “These people suffer as they could not find tap water at the publicplaces,” Ahad said.

“We appeal to the Deputy Commissioner Kupwara to enquireinto the non-maintenance of these water points,” said Nazir Ahmad a teacher.

When contacted Deputy Commissioner Kupwara Anshul Garg saidhe will ask the chairman MCH Handwara to address the issue.

“The members have been elected for the purpose to serve thelocal people. I will ask them to provide the drinking water facility in thetown,” Garg told Greater Kashmir.
