SSM College students at loggerheads with Kashmir University

Srinagar, Apr 9:  Amid complaints of the students of SSM College of Engineering and Technology about the removal of their registration by the Kashmir University (KU), the officials at the varsity denied the allegations saying no such decision has been taken by the varsity so far.

The KU official told Greater Kashmir that the varsity has only barred the students having a shortage in attendance from appearing in the examinations. The SSM College students complained to Greater Kashmir that the KU administration have removed students from registration at the varsity,

“A significant number of students, who are enrolled at SSM College and were registered at Kashmir University, have been abruptly removed from registration without any prior notice or explanation,” the students complained to Greater Kashmir.

The students said the action by the university administration has left them in a state of distress and uncertainty.

“The decision to remove us from registration has been made in the midst of an ongoing legal case between the University of Kashmir and SSM College, initiated by BOPEE. But it is deeply unfair and unjust for the university to penalize innocent students, for issues that are beyond our control and understanding,” the students said.

The students expressed their disappointment saying that the decision will have implications on their academic career and mental well-being.

“Our exams are scheduled from next week but the uncertainty surrounding our registration status has left us in a state of anxiety and fear,” the students said.

Talking to Greater Kashmir, Registrar KU, Prof Naseer Iqbal denied any such move taken by the varsity administration and said the university has only decided to disallow the students, with a shortage in attendance, from appearing the examination.

“We (KU) are going very strict against shortage of attendance and will not allow students to appear in exams. This has not been applied for students of SSM college alone but similar action has been taken against the engineering students enrolled at Institute of Technology, Zakura campus,” he told Greater Kashmir.

He said there are some administrative issues with SSM college with regard to the admission of NRI students but the University has not taken any action yet in this regard.

“That is an administrative issue. But we will not let students suffer at all,” Registrar KU said
