Day 2: Highway remains closed

The Jammu-Srinagar National Highway remained blocked for the second consecutive day on Friday due to multiple landslides at various places between Banihal and Ramban.

Incessant rains in the region triggered fresh landslides along the highway at various places including Sherbi, Ramsu, Digdool, etc.

“There is no chance of restoration of traffic today,” officials said. They said that heavy landslides, boulders and shooting stones at various places along the highway are hampering road restoration work. “Only private LMVs are being permitted towards Jammu from Ramban via Maitra.”

Two sub divisions, Banihal, Ramsu and tehsil Khari also remained cut off with district headquarters.  Some passengers preferred to walk on foot to reach their destinations.

“We have stopped all types of vehicular traffic as a precaution. Fresh landslides have occurred at various places between Ramban and Banihal. Shooting stones are rolling down from hillocks on highway amid continuous downpour since Thursday morning, which are hampering the road restoration work,” DSP, Traffic, National Highway, Ajay Anand said.

However, the contractor company has pressed men and machines into service for restoring the highway on war footing.
