Militants and security forces exchanged fire in Pulwama district of southern Kashmir on Sunday. Reports said the firing has stopped for now but a massive search operation has been launched by the security forces.

The encounter started after 50 Rashtriya Rifles, Special Operation Group of J&K Police and CRPF cordoned off Parigam village of Pulwama.

“Joint search operation was launched today afternoon based on @JmuKmrPolice inputs. Militants fired at the security forces when the cordon was being laid, turning it into an encounter. Firefight ensued. Joint operation in progress,” army tweeted on Sunday evening.

“The operation is underway,” Deputy Inspector General of Police, south Kashmir range, Atul Kumar Goel told the Greater Kashmir.

Police sources said that reinforcement has arrived at the encounter spot and vigil is being kept in adjoining areas.
