Governor calls for calm, urges people to not believe in rumours

"The governor appealed to the people not to listen to orbelieve in rumours being circulated in social media or through other means, thestatement read.

Governor Satya Pal Malik Tuesday reviewed the "prevailinglaw and order situation" in Jammu and Kashmir following an operation conductedagainst Jaish-e-Muhammad camp across the Line of Control, officials said.

"During a meeting the governor was informed that life inboth Kashmir Valley and in Jammu region was normal and that people went abouttheir daily activities without any fear or tension. Markets in Srinagar andJammu were full of people going about their work and transport plied normally,"an official spokesman said in a statement.

The meeting was attended by K. Vijay Kumar, advisor togovernor; BVR Subrahmanyam, chief secretary; Shaleen Kabra, principal secretaryHome; Dilbag Singh, DGP; B Srinivas, ADGP, CID; Munir Khan, ADGP, Law andOrder; V.S. Kaumudi, ADG, CRPF; NS Jamwal, IG, BSF and representatives of othersecurity agencies.

"The governor was also informed of the bandh call given bysome separatist elements for tomorrow (Wednesday). After assessing the law andorder situation in the state, the governor directed all forces to takeeffective measures to maintain public order and peace across the state. Hecomplimented the people of Jammu and Kashmir for remaining composed today andnot getting unnecessarily alarmed," the statement read, adding: "The governordirected the security forces to take all possible steps to ensure thatcivilians remain safe in case of any eventuality".

"The governor appealed to the people not to listen to orbelieve in rumours being circulated in social media or through other means, thestatement read.

"The governor said the government is concerned aboutpeople's welfare and in case it is necessary, it would communicate directlywith them through radio, TV and other means. Maintenance of calm attitude ispriority at this juncture and people must carry on their normal activitieswithout any undue stress or fear," the statement read.
