Jaishankar speaks to Iranian, Israeli Foreign Ministers

New Delhi, Apr 14:  Amid escalating tensions in the region, Minister of External Affairs, S Jaishankar, engaged in phone discussions with Iranian Foreign Minister H Amirabdolahian and Israeli Foreign Minister Israel Katz.

The conversation centred on the pressing need to prevent further escalation and prioritise diplomatic avenues.

   

Minister for External Affairs Jaishankar underscored the importance of exercising restraint and urged both parties to return to the negotiating table.

In his message on social media platform X, Jaishankar emphasised the imperative of avoiding escalation, exercising restraint, and recommitting to diplomacy.

Both foreign ministers agreed to maintain ongoing communication to address the evolving situation.
Furthermore, Jaishankar raised the issue of the 17 Indian crew members aboard the MSC Aries, advocating for their swift and safe release.

The vessel was seized by Iranian troops in the early hours of Saturday morning as it traversed the Strait of Hormuz.

Reports indicate that the Portuguese-flagged vessel, owned by Israeli billionaire Eyal Ofer, had 17 Indian sailors onboard.

Jaishankar also had a conversation with Israeli Foreign Minister Israel Katz.
Jaishankar shared India’s concern at the development and discussed the larger regional situation.

Both the leaders agreed to stay in touch.

In a message on X, Jaishankar said, “Just concluded a conversation with Israel FM @Israel_katz. Shared our concern about the development yesterday. Discussed the larger regional situation. Agreed to stay in touch.”

Earlier on Sunday, the Ministry of External Affairs issued a statement expressing deep concern over the escalating situation.

The statement emphasised the necessity for all parties to exercise restraint and refrain from violence, highlighting the importance of maintaining regional security and stability. India’s embassies in the affected areas are actively involved in ensuring the safety and well-being of the Indian community amid heightened tensions.
