Srinagar, Nov 12: The Kulgam encounter which started on Thursday late afternoon ended on Friday morning with killing of another militant, thus raising the toll of slain militants to two. Police said both killed militants belonged to Hizbul Mujahideen and one among them was a commander.
The operation to flush out militants from Chawalgam area of Kulgam district started on Thursday afternoon after J&K Police, 9 Rashtriya Rifles and CRPF cordoned off the area. On Thursday, in the initial exchange of fire one militant was killed and other was trapped.
On Friday morning, security forces made several announcements asking trapped militants to surrender. However, the trapped militant opened fire on security forces. In retaliatory fire the militant was killed, raising the toll to two.
“They have been identified as operational commander of proscribed terror outfit HM Shiraz Ahmad @Shiraz Molvi @Abu Haris resident of Souch Kulgam, District Commander Yawar Ahmad Bhat resident of Ponipora Kulgam. As per police records both the killed terrorists were linked with proscribed terror outfit HM,” police said here.
“In village Chancer Chawalgam area of Kulgam, a joint cordon and search operation was launched by Police, 9RR and 18Bn CRPF in the said area. During the search operation, as the presence of terrorists was ascertained, they were given the opportunity to surrender. However, they fired indiscriminately upon the joint search party. The joint teams ensuring safety of civilians rescued and shifted all the civilians to safer places. The fire was retaliated, leading to an encounter,” police said.
“In the initial exchange of fire, although one terrorist was killed, however due to darkness the operation remained suspended throughout the night,” police said. “In the wee hours, repeated announcements were again made to the hiding terrorist to surrender, but the terrorist again fired on joint search party which was retaliated leading to the elimination of the hiding terrorist. The dead bodies of both the killed terrorists were retrieved from the site of encounter” police said.
“Both the killed terrorists were part of groups involved in several terror crimes including attack on security forces and civilian atrocities,” police said. “Pertinently, the killed terrorist Shiraz Molvi was an A++ categorized terrorist and was active since the year 2016 figuring among the list of most wanted terrorists.”
“He was also involved in recruiting innocent youth into terror ranks and in spreading a reign of terror by killing civilians as well as political workers in Devsar and Brazloo areas of Kulgam. There are 15 FIRs registered against him for several terror crimes,” police said, adding that 1 AK 47 Rifle and pistol were recovered from killed militants.
