Poonch, Mar 10:  The Jammu and Kashmir Mechanical Engineering Department (MED) is mulling to start snow clearance work on the Mughal Road.

For this purpose, the deployment of snow clearance machinery has already begun.

The Mughal Road, connecting the Shopian district in Kashmir with the Poonch district in the Pir Panjal region, has been closed for the last three months amid the accumulation of snow which has completely blocked the Pir Panjal mountain pass.

The road used to get closed in November-December earlier.

However, this year it was closed in January due to the prolonged dry season in the wake of delayed rains and snowfall.

“To restore movement of vehicles on the road, the Mechanical Engineering Department of the Jammu and Kashmir government is mulling to start snow clearance work to open it for traffic. The machinery meant for carrying out snow clearance has also been deployed on the road and work shall start soon,” officials said.

They said that the snow clearance work would continue for at least a month or even more.

“After the completion of the snow clearance exercise, the road can be thrown open for movement of vehicles after joint inspection by traffic police, police and civil administration,” they said.
