Multiple avalanches hit Kishanganga dam site in Gurez

Bandipora, Feb 22: At least five minor avalanches hit the Kishanganga power project’s dam site in Gurez Valley of north Kashmir’s Bandipora district on Wednesday night, officials said.

The officials said that though the avalanches did not cause any damage to life and property, these left the road stretch from Kanzalwan to Dawar blocked.

An official of the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) said that they had almost finished snow clearance on Kanzalwan to Dawar road on Wednesday following fresh snowfall last week but with avalanches hitting the area, the road was again blocked.

The official said that the snow clearance operation to restore the connectivity was on.

The BRO officials said that a snow clearance operation on the Tulail-Dawar road was also ongoing to connect the far-off tehsil with the centrally-located Dawar.

Officials said that a snow clearance operation on the Gurez-Bandipora road would be launched soon to connect the valley with the district headquarters.

Meanwhile, the Jammu and Kashmir Disaster Management Authority (JKDMA) issued a fresh medium-level avalanche warning in Bandipora district on Thursday.

The JKDMA said that avalanches were likely to occur above 2400 meters or over in the next 24 hours.

It advised the people living in these areas to take precautions and avoid venturing into such areas.
