NIA raids residences of militants, separatists in restive south

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) Wednesday carriedout raids and searches at 11 places in southern Kashmir in cases related toFebruary 14 militant attack along the Srinagar-Jammu highway and “insurgencyfunding”.

Inspector general of NIA Alok Mittal, who is alsospokesperson of the probe agency, said that raids were carried out atresidences of Jaish-e-Muhammad militants, “over-ground workers” andseparatists.

   

Houses of active Jaish-e-Mohammad militant Mudasir AhmadKhan and Suraj Manzoor Malik who is currently in police custody and accordingto locals a tenting businessman, were raided in Midoora, Awantipora. Besidesthese raids, NIA team also conducted searches in six to seven houses inMidoora.

The team later raided the house of another active Jaishmilitant, Yawer Ahmad Dar of Darganaie Gund village of Tral.

The team also raided the house of another active militantSajjad Ahmad Bhat of Marhama. Bhat had allegedly provided his Maruti Eeco carto the JeM suicide bomber Adil Ahmed Dar who carried out the February 14suicide bombing that killed 40 CRPF personnel at Lethpora, said an official.

Searches were also carried out at the houses of “activeover-ground workers” of JeM in Tral, Awantipora and Pulwama areas, where”incriminating materials” including diaries containing “coded writings” wereseized, the official said.

The NIA registered a case on February 20 to probe thePulwama attack.

He said that searches were also carried out at houses ofthree separatist leaders Muhammad Shaban Dar, Showkat Maulvi and MuslimKhawteen Markaz chief Yasmeen Raja of Tulbagh Pampore in connection with analleged funding case registered in May 2017.

“We have seized documents related to terror funding, codedmessages and jehadi literature from their houses,” the official said. “Alsofound were incriminating documents including property details, documentsrelating to financial transactions, electronic devices, mobile phones and SIMcards”.

The NIA, he said, was assisted by the police and CentralReserve Police Force.

Similar raids took place at seven places on Tuesdayincluding at residences of separatist leaders Yasin Malik, Shabir Shah, MirwaizUmar Farooq, Muhammad Ashraf Sehrai, Masarat Alam, Zaffar Akbar Bhat and NaseemGeelani, son of Syed Ali Geelani.
