Srinagar-Leh NH closed for 3rd day

Ganderbal, Apr 1:  The Srinagar-Leh highway which was closed to traffic due to fresh snowfall in the higher reaches, including Zojila Pass on Saturday remained closed for traffic movement for the third consecutive day due to multiple avalanches on the highway.

After the recent snowfall around 3 to 4 inches of snow has accumulated at Zojila Pass on the Srinagar-Leh National Highway, prompting a precautionary halt to traffic movement.

The Border Roads Organisation (BRO) has deployed its machinery for snow clearance, with an official from the BRO’s Project Beacon stating that the machines are actively working to clear the snow from the road.

However, he said that multiple avalanches occurred at different spots along the road which extended the snow clearance work and resulted in the closure of the Srinagar-Leh National Highway for the third consecutive day.

Hundreds of Light Motor Vehicles (LMVs) including passenger vehicles have been stranded on both sides of the highway since Saturday.

An official said that given the green signal from the BRO, the road would reopen for one-way traffic on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, as per the traffic plan and advisory for April 2, subject to fair weather and the green signal from the road clearance agency, only one-way traffic for all LMVs including passenger vehicles with anti-skid chains would be allowed from Srinagar towards Kargil.

It said that the vehicles would be allowed from Sonamarg from 9:30 am to 1 pm and thereafter no vehicle would be allowed before and after the cut-off timings.
