Year Ender | 227 militants, 43 civilians and 53 forces personnel killed

During the year 2020, 227 militants were reported to be killed in 102 gunfights in Jammu and Kashmir while 633 persons involved in militant activities were arrested.

During the year, 43 civilians and 53 forces personnel were also killed in gunfights and cross border shelling.

   

There were also five incidents of drone dropping while 167 youth joined militant ranks among who 75 were killed in gunfights and 49 were arrested.

Police said most gunfights had been recorded in south Kashmir where the highest number of militants were killed.

Police said areas like Shopian, Kulgam and Pulwama which have seen instances of recruitment of local youth by militant groups recorded maximum number of gunfights.

Giving details about militancy-related incidents to Greater Kashmir, Inspector General of Police, Kashmir, Vijay Kumar in written note said that during the year there were 89 gunfights in different parts of Kashmir in which 209 militants including 34 non-local militants were killed.

Compared to this, in 2019, 152 militants including 32 non-locals were killed in J&K. In 2018, 215 militants were killed by the forces. It IGP’s written note said that 57 militants and 625 over ground workers (OGWs) of militants were arrested during the year.

“Twelve local militants surrendered during live gunfights and two civilians were killed during cross-firing in gunfights,” the official data reads. “There is major check on collateral damage.”

The Police data mentions that 158 killed militants had been buried in isolated place like Baramulla, Handwara and Ganderbal in the presence of the magistrate.

“With the new burial management, Police has save thousands of lives from spreading of COVID19 infection,” Kumar said. “The parents of the militants have been showing great trust in Police in our efforts for their surrender during live gunfights.”

He said Police had been leading from the front during gunfights and maintaining sanctity of religious places.

“Meej (Pampore) gunfight is the best example where without entering into the mosque we killed three militants of LeT,” the IGP Kashmir said.

During the gunfights and other search operations, 210 automatic rifles, 228 pistols and 214 grenades were recovered during the year 2020.

The top Police officer said that JKP brought more than three dozen “misguided” youth into mainstream with the active support of the families.

“These boys had either joined militancy or were about to,” he said.

Kumar said this year 167 youth joined militant ranks of which 75 were killed in gunfights, 49 arrested and rest were active in the field.

“The situation isn’t alarming but it concerns us,” he said. “The families need to enforce parental control over youth.”

JAMMU

Giving details about militancy-related incidents in Jammu division, Inspector General of Police, Jammu, Mukesh Singh said there had been 13 militancy-related incidents in Jammu in which 18 militants were killed.

“A total of 13 militancy-related incidents took place in Jammu Zone in 2020,” Singh told Greater Kashmir. “Two in Jammu, five in Rajouri, three in Doda, two in Kishtwar and one in Poonch.”

The IGP Jammu said 18 militants were killed in Jammu zone, among them two in Doda, seven in Jammu, two in Kishtwar, five in Rajouri, two in Pooch in 2020.

“Eight militants were arrested, three among them from Jammu, one from Doda, three from Rajouri and one from Poonch,” he said.

The IGP Jammu chief said that there were five Incidents of drone dropping in border areas of Jammu zone in 2020 (one incident at Kathua, one at Rajouri, one at Jammu and two at Samba,” he said.

A senior Police officer said that during the year 53 forces personnel and 43 civilians were killed in Jammu.

“Besides gunfights, the forces personnel and civilians were also killed during cross border violations,” he said. “During the year, we recovered 14 IEDs compared to 36 recovered in 2019.”
