Sopore, Apr 29: Due to continuous rains, various parts of Sopore remained water-logged causing hardships to local people.
The worst hit areas of the town remained the low-lying areas of Sher Colony, Tulibal, Mahrajpora, Ningli Bala, Alamdar Colony, Krankshivan Colony, Tarzoo, Rakh Hygam, Nowpora Kalan and Alsafa Colony.
After the rains the water level in river Jhelum is a cause of worry for the residents of various localities of Sopore town.
Ghulam Hassan Dar, a resident of Ningli area of town, told Greater Kashmir that, “The water level is still few feet below the danger level, but continuous downpour since the last two days has submerged hundreds of households of Ningli Bala and Sher Colony.”
Dar said that water has almost started to recede in river Jhelum, but is slowly increasing in many parts of Sopore town, especially in the low-lying areas which is worrisome for many areas on the river banks.
The water has inundated lanes and bylanes in many other areas of town. Local residents of these areas said that the people are facing immense hardships.
Incessant rains for the past couple of days have led to waterlogging and water has entered into many houses. The rains have exposed the defunct drainage system and the callous attitude of the government, said locals.
The most affected inundated areas are Sher Colony, Mahrajpora, Tarzoo, Ningli, Krankshivan, Tulibal, Amargrah, Moominabad, Naseem Bagh, and other adjoining localities. Residents said that due to the poor drainage system in the entire Sopore town, waterlogging has become a worry for them. The locals said that they cannot go outside their homes due to waterlogging on their lanes and bylanes.
ADC Sopore S A Raina along with other officials visited various affected areas of Zaingair and Rafiabad including Goripora, Darapora, Babagund, Behrampora, Pazalpora, Gonipora, where the level of the water has taken a flood like situation due to which main roads are affected creating inconvenience to the people in crossing over. ADC urged the people to stay indoors and not to move towards such nallah to avert any chance of mishap. ADC also directed the Exen R&B Department to remain focused on these affected roads.
Moreover, ADC said that he has been monitoring the situation every hour since Monday morning. “Machinery is also active, so there is nothing to worry about,” ADC said.
