Doctor forgets sponge in woman’s body, sepsis kills her

A 48-year-old woman died on Sunday due to medical negligence by the doctors at Kishtwar hospital, who operated upon the woman a month ago and forgot to remove a medical sponge, used in the operation, from her body.

A protest was held in Kishtwar outside the local police station against the negligence on part of the doctor. The husband of the deceased, Mohammed Iqbal, along with other protesters, demanded an FIR to be lodged against the doctor. “About a month ago, the doctors in Kishtwar hospital operated upon my wife as she was suffering from gall bladder stone. My wife started to complain of abdominal pain post the operation. I got her to GMC&H Jammu to be examined where the doctors told us about the medical sponge in her body. She had developed septicemia and ultimately died on Sunday.”

The protesters complained that it was criminal on the part of the doctor to show utter negligence. “The woman had sold her jewellery for her daughter’s marriage. All the money that she got was spent in the operation and she did not even survive. Now what is the poor family supposed to do?” they said.

The grieved family and agitating locals demanded that a case be lodged at an earliest and the doctor should be put behind bars, besides being barred from practicing medicine ever again.

It is pertinent to mention here that every year in India, more than 90,000 people die of sepsis.
