Two persons were killed and 53 wounded Thursday when a passenger bus they were traveling in plunged into a stream in Udhampur district of the state.

Two persons were killed and 53 wounded Thursday when a passenger bus they were traveling in plunged into a stream in Udhampur district of the state.

"A passenger bus on way from Udhampur to Ramnagar skidded off the road and fell into a rivulet near Kooh Nullah in Ramnagar area," a police official said here.

He said the two passengers died on the spot but 53 injured others were removed from the site of the accident.

The deceased were identified as Krishan Lal, son of Sandokhu Ram resident of Marta and Mohhmad Haroon, son of Naseer Mohammad resident of Koohallah.

"Two persons were brought dead to the hospital and 42 other injured were reported in district hospital Udhampur and 11 were taken to Community Health Center Ramnagar," Dr K C Dogra, chief medical officer of Udhampur told Greater Kashmir.

"Three survivors sustained serious injuries and were referred to a military hospital in Udhampur while 39 injured persons are out of danger but still admitted in district hospital where they are under observation."

Eight passengers with minor injuries were later sent home.

Meanwhile former finance minister Syed Mohammad Altaf Bukhari has expressed deep shock and grief over the loss of lives in the tragic road accident.

Expressing serious concern over an alarming increase in road accidents especially in mountainous regions of the State, Bukhari urged the authorities to go tough against the traffic violators to contain such heart wrenching mishaps.

He urged governor led administration to constitute more special checking squads especially in mountainous regions of the State to stop increasing road accidents that lead to loss of precious lives off and on. Bukhari also demanded immediate release of ex gratia relief to the bereaved families.

He extended heartfelt condolences to families of those who died in tragic accident and others who sustained injuries in this mishap. "I pray for eternal peace to the departed souls and speedy recovery to those who sustained injuries in this accident," Bukhari said.
