Jammu, Oct 9: Stating that opposition is imperative for strengthening democracy and creating healthy atmosphere for prosperity and growth, Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad has called upon the Corporators to play their vital role in translating people's development aspirations into reality.
Azad was inaugurating Jammu Municipal Corporation assembly hall for Corporators today. He expressed happiness on the presence of all political leaders and Municipal Corporators cutting across political considerations at the function, saying that this is the novelty of our democracy and cultural ethos.
Chief Minister said that Jammu is being developed as a significant tourist destination and attractions of such nature are being created in the city and around that even pilgrims visiting Shri Mata Vaishno Devi and Shri Amarnathji would not miss to stay in Jammu. He said that keeping this in view several development and beautification schemes have been launched in the winter capital of the state while many more are in the pipeline.
Azad said that Jammu city has expanded rapidly with large increase in population over the years and called upon the Corporators to make concerted efforts in expanding and upgrading civic amenities accordingly by generating resources for the purpose.
Referring to the setting up of Municipal Corporations for Srinagar and Jammu cities, Azad said that he had suggested this to the then Chief Minister Dr. Farooq Abdullah in 1996, who agreed to the suggestion, saying that it was imperative for developing civic amenities on modern lines in both the capital cities of the state.
Chief Minister while referring to the construction of the hall appreciated its workmanship. He said that with the construction of the hall excellent interaction place for Corporators has become available where they could deliberate upon the plans and programmes for development of the city.
