A delegation of SKUAST-Teaching Association Jammu (SKUAST-TAJ) met Deputy Chief Minister, Dr. Nirmal Singh and submitted a memorandum regarding upgradation of SKUAST-Jammu to Central Agricultural University of Jammu.

As per press release, SKUAST-TAJ-president Dr. Vikas Sharma apprised the Dy. CM that in the Northern India there is not even a single Central Agricultural University so far and Jammu region of Jammu and Kashmir state is the most suitable place for the establishment of the same.

It is because Jammu region of the state, unlike the Kashmir Province and that of Ladakh, is bestowed upon with four agro climatic zones by nature.

They comprised of subtropical, subtemperate, temperate and cold arid zones, which are not available in any other area of the country.  This is the reason, why a large no. of crops, cash crops, vegetables and fruits are gown throughout the year. Central Agricultural University Status for SKUAST-Jammu will help in increasing the staff / research stations in the far flung / remote areas and availability of increased financial assistance directly from the Central Government will further help to take the latest technology to the door steps of farmers in far flung areas and further this will be a good confidence measure for the people of Jammu, who have struggled a lot for this Agricultural                                                      University.

Dr. Vikas added that the name of SKUAST-Jammu will also be changed to Central Agriculture University of Jammu as the common name of SKUAST-J and SKUAST-K is creating a lot of problems and                                             confusions.

Sanction from Planning Department for opening of New Faculties/Divisions in the University which include College of Dairy Technology, College of Agricultural Engineering and Department of Seed Technology, quarterly/timely release of funds from the State Government for payment of salaries and flood relief package for SKUAST -Jammu were the other demands put forth by the association before the Dy. CM.

After giving a patient hearing to SKUAST-J teachers, Dr. Nirmal Singh said that for the overall development of Jammu Division and to address time to time demands of farming community, steps will be taken up very soon to oblige Jammuities by addressing their genuine demand for upgradation of State Agriculture University.

Further, he assured full support to SKUAST-Jammu from present state government.

The deputation comprised of Dr. Vivek M. Arya – general secretary, Dr. P.K. Rai – joint secretary, Dr. Devinder Sharma – publicity secretary and Dr. SP Singh and Dr Poonam Parihaar.
