While on one hand traffic violations and jumping of signals is a common sight on city roads, but on the other hand there is still confusion as to who will install the CCTV Cameras to check the increasing violations.
The traffic authorities have still been passing the buck claiming that the Jammu Municipal Corporation (JMC) is supposed to install the CCTV Cameras in the city as the traffic signal lights were also installed by it.
"The traffic signals lights in the city were installed by the JMC, and therefore, the CCTV Cameras will also be installed by it", SSP Traffic, Mohan Lal said.
However, the JMC on the other hand maintained that installation of the CCTV Cameras is not the job of the corporation as checking traffic violations is not the domain of the JMC.
"How can a Khilafarzi Officer or Health officer check as to what kind of violation has been committed?", JMC Commissioner, Soujanya Sharma said.
"The traffic Police did not have the funds with it, and therefore, a decision in the public interest was taken by the government and JMC installed the traffic signal lights in the city", the Commissioner added.
He said that the CCTV cameras, once installed, need round the clock surveillance, which is not the job of the JMC. "So far, we have also been looking after the maintenance of the traffic signal lights going out of way", Sharma further added.
He said that this is a security concern which doesn't fall in the jurisdiction of the JMC.
It may be mentioned installation of CCTV Cameras along the traffic signal lights is an utmost requirement to check the violations but even after the passage of more than two (2) years since the signals were put in place, the CCTV cameras have not been installed so far.
There are thirty (30) traffic signal lights which are being installed in different rotaries and locations of the city for streamlining the traffic.
