Women Empowerment Forum (WEF), a Jammu based NGO working for the cause of women and child, has expressed concern over the rise in the incidents of crime against women across the nation and urged the people and the government to wake up to collectively counter this menace.

Addressing a press conference, President of the forum Dr Anuradha Goswami said, "Recent incident that happened in national capital wherein an innocent 19 year old girl was brutally stabbed to death by two youth in full public view has exposed all the myths surrounding tall claims of government on women empowerment and their security."

She said it was a matter of great shame for all of us that a young girl was killed in front of so many people but no one dared to come forward and save the girl from being killed and even the police remained elusive throughout.

It exposes the tall claims of government on making surroundings safe for women folk, she added.

"Also it's a matter of great concern that steep rise has been registered in incidents like rape with minors, dowry deaths and other crime against women while the respective governments are watching like mute spectators and have left everything u pto dumb and deaf police force. The state of Jammu and Kashmir and also not an exception to this trend," she expressed.

Dr Goswami suggested the state government to launch sensitization programmes at different forums to launch awareness among the people regarding safety of softer sex. She also suggested enactment of stringent acts to punish the perpetrators of violence against women so that fear can be instilled among the criminal and sick minded people.

She urged the entire society to wake up to this demanding situation and start efforts from their respective house and surrounding to enable a friendly and secure atmosphere to females so that they can also move and work freely without any fear. The WEF President also briefed about various activities initiated by the forum to empower the women of Jammu and Kashmir.
