The Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP) today urged people of Rajouri and adjoining areas to uphold the 'years old' communal harmony in the region in wake of tension prevailing in the town over alleged burning of a flag bearing religious scripture.
Speaking to media persons here, BJP Chief Spokesperson Advocate Sunil Sethi said some vested interests in the society are out to vitiate the peaceful atmosphere in the state of Jammu and Kashmir and appealed the people of Rajouri town to uphold the years old communal harmony.
He said the State unit of BJP is highly concerned over the prevalent communal tension in the border town.
"Government has taken timely steps to control the situation by imposing curfew and taking other remedial measures. We are happy that the situation did not go out of hand", he said.
Sunil Sethi also appealed the secular segment of the society to play an active role to restore peaceful atmosphere in the state 'to help in achieving the goal of peace and progress for all'.
He, however, claimed that the Islamic State flags burnt in Rajouri town bearing religious scripture was downloaded from the internet sites.
Meanwhile the Congress party today appealed the people to maintain calm and religious brotherhood. In a statement, party leaders cautioned the people against "communal elements who want to damage the secular fabric of the state".
