“SSWB mulls setting up of recreation centers”

The State Social Welfare Board (SSWB) is contemplating to set up recreation centres for senior citizens with a view to revive traditional Chopals in the State.

The State Social Welfare Board (SSWB) is contemplating to set up recreation centres for senior citizens with a view to revive traditional Chopals in the State.

Board Chairperson, Prof Nirmal Gupta, today said this after inaugurating first of its kind Chopal, established by All Jammu and Kashmir Citizens Welfare Council in collaboration with the Board at Shiv Nagar Maralian in Miran Sahib here.

Prof Gupta said senior citizens needed and deserved to be treated politely and patiently as everybody has to go through this stage. 

She said that government has launched several schemes for benefits of these people so they do not have to face dejection and alienation. She appealed the young generation to take care of their elders as they sacrifice all their comforts to make them better than others

Speaking on the occasion, Secretary of the Board, Aamir Ali, highlighted the measures being taken for ensuring a dignified life to senior citizens. He said that Union Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment is implementing an Integrated Programme for Older Persons (IPOP) since 1992 with the objective of improving quality of life of senior citizens by providing basic amenities like shelter, food, medical care and entertainment opportunities.
