Independent MLA from Udhampur constituency Pawan Gupta on Saturday demanded separate statehood for Jammu province.

Addressing a press conference here alongwith a group, Gupta said, "Word 'Kashmir' is suicidal for development of Jammu province".

"Kashmir is known for conflict and crisis, it is suicidal for development of 'peace loving' Jammu and Ladakh regions," he said.

The MLA, who was part of Mufti Mohammad Sayeed led Government as minister from BJP quota, said, "Only a section of people raised Azadi slogans in Kashmir but entire state is suffering".

"The business of entire state has come to halt, tourists are afraid to visit even to Jammu as people identify the state as J&K," he said, adding, "Jammu region always rejected demands of autonomy, self-rule, Azadi or inclusion with Pakistan but due to its unfortunate association with Kashmir it has suffered from last 70 years".

"Jammu has its own identity, own political, social and economic aspirations, which cannot be met under rule of Kashmir-dominated dispensation," he said.

"Without losing a moment Union Government should delink Jammu from the Kashmir region and grant status of state to Jammu," he said.

He added statehood to Jammu will help province to become prosperous and develop on line of other states.

He also said 'separation form Kashmir will also reduce the ground of unrest to merely 6000 Sq km area in the valley, which will be easily controllable and does not affect business of Ladakh and Jammu regions'.
