The opposition members on Saturday staged a walkout from the Legislative Assembly (LA) over cane-charging of protestors at Indra Chowk Jammu.
The issue was raised by opposition MLA Ajaz Ahmed Khan who informed the House that reserved (ST&SC) category employees are protesting at Indra Chowk Jammu and demanding 50 percent relaxation for promotion in their respective departments.
"Government should fix a time frame and meet them to resolve the issue," Khan told the House and asked the speaker that the government should later inform the House about the matter. Later, the opposition members disrupted the proceedings in the House and staged protests against the government for its "failure" to resolve the issues raised by the reserved category employees.
The opposition members stormed inside the well to stage protest and told the House that the protestors were cane charged by police, resulting in injuries to the employees. The Minister for Parliamentary Affairs Abdul Rehman Veeri however intervened and said "the government has sent a minister to hold a meeting with the protesting employees."
"As per the information received from the ground, the protestors were marching towards civil secretariat and were stopped by Police who resorted to tear gas shelling," Veeri said. The opposition members however questioned the move and said "why the protestors were cane charged when the minister on going to meet them."
"Government should suspend the concerned Police officer who ordered for tear gas shelling and cane-charging of protesting employees," the opposition demanded and created ruckus in the House. Demanding justice for the reserved category employees, the opposition members later stated a walkout from the House.
Meanwhile, Parliamentary Affairs minister, Abdul Rehman Veeri informed the House that the matter regarding reservation in promotions for the SC and ST categories in government services was presently sub-judice in the Supreme Court of India.
