The authorities exhumed the body of a man from a graveyard in Poonch after suspecting that he may be the youth from the valley, who went missing from Poonch on May 25 after which a missing report was also lodged in local police station.
As per police sources, on May 29, a semi-decomposed body was found lying in a river near Chakan Da Bagh cross-LoC trading centre and the same was shifted by the police to district hospital Poonch, where legal formalities and autopsy were conducted.
"The body was kept in the mortuary for 72 hours, but as no one claimed it despite messages shared on media and social media, the police buried the body in collaboration with Auqaf Islamic in a local graveyard," police sources further said.
"While investigating the case, the police conducted an exercise on some fresh missing cases of Poonch during which it came to fore that a valley based youth has been missing since the last few days," sources informed, adding that the missing report of the valley based youth was lodged by a local man, who stated that his friend, namely Ubaidullah Lone son of Abdul Hamid and a resident of Srinagar, visited his house and went missing under mysterious conditions.
Initially, the father of the missing youth was called to Poonch by the police to identify the body through the recovered belongings, but the father denied that the semi-decomposed body was of his son.
However, the police, still having strong apprehension, called the missing youth's mother to identify the belongings. She identified the body and said that it was her son whose body had been found.
On Friday, after the permission of District Magistrate, and in the presence of an Executive Magistrate and team of medico-legal experts, the body was exhumed from the grave in-camera and was handed over to the family from the valley.
Additional SP Poonch Anwar UlHaq told Greater Kashmir that the DNA samples of both the body as well as of the family members have been collected and will be sent for laboratory testing to authenticate the things.
"The mother of the missing youth identified the belongings recovered from the semi-decomposed body and the same was exhumed from the graveyard after the Dm's permission," Haq said.
He said that some vital clues have also been developed by the police in the case which further hint that the semi-decomposed body is of missing valley youth, adding that further investigation is going on.
Meanwhile, as per details available with Greater Kashmir, the missing valley youth used to work at Baba Ghulam Shah Badshah University, but was not a part of the institute when the incident occurred.
"News regarding the demise of Ubaid Hameed Lone is being circulated on social media. Our heartfelt condolences are with the bereaved family. This is to clarify that he was not the student of BGSBU. He was a contractual GDH and was disengaged from university rolls more than a year ago," a press statement issued by BGSB University mentioned.
