Prof Harbans Singh, former vice-chancellor of Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology Jammu (SKUAST-J) was the chief guest on the occasion while Prof R Rampal, HoD environmental sciences' department, Jammu University, was the guest of honour.
The speakers expressed their annoyance over non-seriousness of housing and urban development and local bodies department in creating infrastructural facilities for solid waste management in J&K as per 2016 MSW rules despite regular monitoring by the state High Court and the Supreme Court of India.
EPG governing council member Peerzada Fayaz Ahmad, in his address, said that the status of SWM is very poor in our State in general and Kashmir valley in particular.
Making an appeal to Governor S P Malik for his intervention in this serious issue affecting general health of people, forum secretary (Technical) Lalit Sharma said that proper disposal of waste entails segregation at source, efficient carriage and scientific disposal in landfills or incinerators.
"None of this is being done in our state, shockingly. Even, the J&KPCB has been rendered as mere a toothless body," he said.
S Prem Singh Verma, forum vice-chairman, retired Judge KYS Manhas, CCF (Retired) Rajeshwar Singh Jasrotia also expressed their concern over the issue during the seminar.
