Students of Central University of Jammu (CUJ) Tuesday staged a demonstration appealing varsity administration to rollback the bus fare hike.
The protesting students claimed that in the prospectus, the bus fare was Rs 1000 per year, but the authorities are pressurising them in the middle of the session to pay 10 times of the fare i.e. Rs 1000 per month "which is injustice."
"We're being threatened by the varsity staff to either pay Rs 1000 per month or stop using the bus service. To protest this diktat of the varsity, hundreds of the students have boycotted their classes," a varsity student said wishing anonymity.
The student further said that the university works for 5 days a week and hence students also attend their classes for approximately 22 days in the month.
"Rs 1000 for 22 days sound too unfair," he said.
Meanwhile, the students said that they waited for the VC, CUJ, Prof Ashok Aima for around one hour to come out of his office to listen to their (students') demands but the latter (Aima) didn't turn up. The students called off the protest on the request of dean students' welfare, Deepak Pathania.
They, however, threatened that if their demands are not fulfilled, they will continue to agitating in the days to come.
