Border tension: Security beefed up in Jammu

In the wake of persistent tension on borders, security has been beefed up in Kathua, Samba and Jammu, the districts with huge area close to International Border (IB) and Line of Control (LoC).

In the wake of persistent tension on borders, security has been beefed up in Kathua, Samba and Jammu, the districts with huge area close to International Border (IB) and Line of Control (LoC).

Sources said the security forces are maintaining a close vigil on the movement of suspects in the interiors and areas close to borders. A heavy deployment of police and paramilitary forces has been made on highways and the nakas in urban areas to thwart any untoward incident, they added.

During night nakas, at main city squares, senior police officials are seen themselves frisking people and searching vehicles coming towards Jammu from other districts.

Meanwhile, a mock-drill was conducted today by Special Operation Group (SOG), CRPF and police personnel in and around General Bus Stand Jammu to assess the preparedness of forces to deal with any emergency situation. Police conducted mock drills at crowded Bus Stand, Pacca Danga, Bakshi Nagar and Nowabad area of the Jammu city.

People in these areas were surprised when contingents of forces arrived all of a sudden and started the operation.

According to SSP Jammu, Dr Sunil Gupta, the main focus of the exercise was to check the 'coordination and reaction time' of the forces to thwart any attempt of bomb and grenade blast.

"In case of blasts, general public assembles around the places of incident which could result in further loss of human lives in the event of more explosions. The entire exercise was conducted to aware people and prepare forces," he said.

According to him, through such exercises, SOG is preparing to plug the lanes leading to bus stand to prevent the crowd, catch the suspect, facilitate diversion of traffic and to tell the public not to pay any heed to rumour mongers.
