Governor SP Malik to hoist Tricolor at JU

 In a first, Governor Satya Pal Malik will lay wreath at Balidan Stambh before unfurling the National Flag on Republic Day at State level function at Jammu University ground.

Sources told Greater Kashmir that Governor Malik, along with his advisors and senior army and police officers will lay wreath at Balidan Stambh, a memorial built near parade venue (Jammu University) to remember the sacrifices of all army soldiers and other forces personnel, including State police, who had laid down their lives while serving the State.

   

“This would be the first occasion for the State when a dignitary will pay homage to the soldiers before unfurling the National Flag,” sources said, adding, “This tradition is followed in National Capital where President or Prime Minister pay floral tributes at Amar Jawan Joyti before heading towards the main event venue.”

The Republic Day parade will start at 9.50 am at Jammu University ground in the winter capital and “At Home” will be organised the same evening at Jammu Raj Bhawan.

Meanwhile, for the smooth conduct of the Republic Day programmes and parade in the winter capital, the traffic police have issued a traffic advisory for January 26.

“All routes touching Jammu University, including Bikram Chowk-Panama Chowk- Railway Station, Narwal- Qasim Nagar -Gujjar Nagar and Bagh-E-Bahu police station Chowk have been restricted for use of general public till 2.00 pm, while the valid entry pass holders would be allowed to use these roads for reaching parade venue,” senior superintendent of city traffic police said.

“Nine colour codes, with specific parking slots, were issued to all invited guests to end the last minutes confusion for entry. The road users are requested by the police to avoid these routes and plan their journey in advance,” he added.

“The public transport like matadors and other vehicles on Bahu-Fort, Narwal, Bathandi and Railway Station routes are diverted from Bikram Chowk towards district police lines and then towards Narwal till 2pm,” he said. “The Gujjar Nagar Bridge would also remain shut till 2 pm,” he further said. He, however added that city’s flyover, both bridges of Bikram Chowk, Bhagwati Nagar, fourth Sidhra Bridge, Jewal, Bus Stand routes shall remain operational for entire day.

There are no restrictions on inter-State buses operating on Banihal, Katra, Udhampur, Doda routes, while owners of trucks and busses plying on Kathua, Samba, RS Pura routes have been asked to follow cut off points and diversions.
