HPC releases BOPEE scam convict on parole

Former chairman of Board of Professional Entrance Exams (BOPEE) Mushtaq Ahmed Peer on Wednesday released on parole by the High Powered Committee (HPC) amid prevailing situation due to COVID19.

Mushtaq was released on parole by the committee constitutedby the Government of Jammu and Kashmir on direction by the Apex Court todecongest the prisons across the UnionTerritory. The committee comprised Executive Chairman State Legal ServicesAuthority, Principal Secretary Home and Director General Prisons. Last week, abench of Justice Tashi Rabstan had asked Mushtaq to approach HPC of theapplication in accordance with the guidelines laydown the categories for therelease of prisoners given the spread of COVID-19. Pertinently, a SpecialAnti-Corruption Court had sentenced him to 16 years of rigorous imprisonmentfor his involvement in the 2012 Common Entrance Test (CET) scam in April 2018.
