SKUAST-J to hold national conference on women empowerment

Society for integrated development of agriculture, veterinary and ecological sciences (SIDAVES) in collaboration with SKUAST-Jammu and SKUAST-Kashmir would be organising two days’ national conference on women empowerment through agro entrepreneurship for livelihood security with effect from February 7-8 at varsity’s main campus, Chatha, Jammu, a press statement issued by the university said.

Director research SKUAST-J and convener of the conference Dr JP Sharma, while expressing about equal rights and opportunities of women, informed that women empowerment has assumed global significance in view of various international initiatives, commitments taken by the world community.

   

He further emphasized that the empowerment, autonomy of women and the improvement of women’s social, economic, political status is essential for the achievement of both transparent and accountable government and sustainable development in all areas of life.

Organising secretary, Dr Shalini Suri expressed that women are facing threats to their lives, health and well-being as a result of being overburdened with work and lack of power and influence.

“So, expert group sought in its recommendations to identify practical steps that could be taken to promote equality between women and men, that would help empower women with desirable economic and demographic effects,” she said.

Co-organising secretary, Dr Kiran Kour also spoke on the occasion.
